To-ji & Kiyomizu-dera Autumn Night Illumination|A Magical Kyoto Evening with JR Central’s Special Early Entry

I recently visited the night illuminations at To-ji and Kiyomizu-dera.
At To-ji, I used JR Central’s Special Early Entry for the nighttime admission, and it was absolutely worth the extra 800 yen—far fewer people and plenty of time to capture the beautiful reflection of the Five-storied Pagoda.
Kiyomizu-dera was glowing with its famous blue “Kannon Beam,” and even though the autumn leaves were past their peak, the scenery was still stunning.
This article covers my experience at both temples, along with the full 2025 illumination details.

To-ji Night Illumination|A Peaceful Visit with JR Central’s Early Entry

On December 5, 2025, I visited To-ji for its annual autumn night illumination.
I opted for JR Central’s Special Early Entry, which costs an additional 800 yen, and it made a huge difference—much smaller crowds and a more relaxed atmosphere for photography.

The moment I entered the grounds, the reflection of the Five-storied Pagoda shining on the still water took my breath away.
Although the leaves were slightly past their peak, the deep autumn tones were still beautiful and made for wonderful photos.

The Kondo and Kodo halls were also open for special nighttime viewing (photography not allowed).
Seeing Yakushi Nyorai and the 360-degree Mandala statues in the quiet evening light felt truly special.

After To-ji, I headed to Kiyomizu-dera, which was holding its final weekend of the autumn night illumination.
It was crowded, but the iconic blue “Kannon Beam” stretching into the night sky created such a powerful scene.
The illuminated stage, three-storied pagoda, and autumn foliage were absolutely worth the visit.
