What is Mount Katsuragi Azalea Garden? 🌺
Mount Katsuragi is one of the most famous azalea viewing spots in the Kansai region of Japan.
Every May, the mountain transforms into a sea of bright red and pink flowers, attracting visitors from all over Japan.
The contrast between:
- colorful azaleas
- fresh green mountains
- and blue spring skies
creates an unforgettable landscape✨

How to Get to Mount Katsuragi 🚡
Step 1: Go to Kintetsu Gose Station
The easiest way to access Mount Katsuragi is via
Kintetsu Gose Line.
From Osaka or Nara, head to Kintetsu Gose Station first.
Popular routes include:
- Osaka Abenobashi Station
- Kashiharajingu-mae Station

Step 2: Take the Bus to the Ropeway Station 🚌
From Kintetsu Gose Station, take the bus bound for the ropeway station.

The ride takes about 15 minutes.

During azalea season, buses can get crowded even on weekdays, especially in the morning.
If possible, visiting earlier in the day is recommended✨
Step 3: Ride the Mount Katsuragi Ropeway 🚡
Next, take the
Mount Katsuragi Ropeway to the mountaintop area.

The ropeway ride takes about 6 minutes and offers beautiful mountain scenery along the way.

It’s one of the easiest ways to enjoy the famous azalea fields without a difficult hike.

Step 4: Walk to the Azalea Garden

After exiting the ropeway, it’s about a 15-minute walk to the azalea viewing area.
The trail is easy to follow, with maps and signs along the route.

There are some gentle slopes and stairs, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended👟

2026 Bloom Status 🌺

During our visit in mid-May:
- most azaleas were near peak bloom
- the mountainside was covered in vivid colors
- some flowers had started fading
- but many buds were still unopened
Overall, it was still an amazing time to visit✨
Both the lower observation deck and upper viewing areas offered incredible panoramic views.

Food & Rest Areas at the Summit 🍡

There are several places to relax and eat near the summit, including:
- Shirakaba Shokudo
- Highland Lodge
One of the most popular local snacks was the giant yomogi mochi (mugwort rice cake) served with sweet miso sauce.

It was delicious and surprisingly filling✨

Near the restaurant area, there are also:
- terrace seating
- scenic observation decks
- relaxing mountain views
making it a great place to take a break🌿

Crowd Levels & Best Visiting Times
Even on a weekday, the area was fairly crowded during peak bloom season.

The busiest spots were:
- bus lines
- ropeway stations
- observation decks

For a smoother experience, we recommend:
- visiting early in the morning
- choosing weekdays if possible
- avoiding peak midday hours
